eBay getting serious, should Autotrader be concerned?

eBay has announced they have purchased Trade2Trade the trade marketplace for UK motor dealers.

This deal would seem to show that e-bay have seen the potential in the motor trade to help sell cars in their auction format, indeed many players in the motor trade are now taking advantage of what can be significantly lower costs in advertising stock on eBay as opposed to the old favourite Autotrader.

Is this time for Autotrader to start looking over its shoulder and protecting its number one spot? We will be taking an in-depth look at Autotrader V eBay early in 2009 so watch this space….

“Trade2Trade Ltd UK wishes to announce that it was this week bought along with its Danish parenting company ‘Den Bla Avis’ and ‘BilBasen’ by eBay for approximately $390 Million (approx £222 Million).

Trade2Trade is currently the fastest growing B2B marketplace in the UK for the use of motor dealers only. Since January 2008 Trade2Trade has experienced a user growth by 65 percent on its versatile online marketplace.”
