General Motors faces mass protests by European labour unions today as thousands of workers from the Opel, Vauxhall and Saab divisions gather in Germany to rebuff any moves to eliminate jobs and close plants.
Employees are gathering to demand “a secure and viable future,” IG Metall, the country’s biggest labor union, said on its Web site. The biggest rally, scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Adam Opel GmbH unit’s headquarters in the Frankfurt suburb of Ruesselsheim, may attract as many as 15,000 protestors.
“This is a crisis that can only be solved by means of joint action, not closures or layoffs,” Rainer Einenkel, the works council chief at Opel’s plant in Bochum, said by phone. “That’ll be our main message” at today’s demonstrations.
