Peugeot Citroen sales drop by 25%

BBC News reports that Peugeot Citroen, France’s biggest carmaker, has reported a 25% drop in sales in the first three months of the year, from a year earlier.

The fall “illustrates the full extent of the crisis being experienced by the automotive industry worldwide,” the carmaker said.

The company also confirmed that it expects to make a loss in 2009. Full story…

I think it’s because the models Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1:

The Peugeot 107, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo are all quite popular among the general public, especially with young drivers, females and reportedly, gay men (the city car trio, along with rivals like the Fiat 500 have a devoted LGBT fan base). They are funky, cheeky and fuel-efficient. However, all of them suffer from some serious and several not-so-serious, but quite annoying problems.

To begin with, many owners report that the plastic panels on the doors develop bumps and humps. Interior plastics are as cheap as one may expect.

The boot is heavily criticised by both owners and the motoring press due to water leaks during rainy days. In addition, the door mechanism of the boot can easily be damaged.

Safety problems are far more serious. According to various sources, the fuel tank of Peugeot 107, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo can be easily damaged in the event of a rear-end collision which may result in fire. However, owners should not fear – such fires are generally not common, so the 107, C1 and Aygo are not some 21st Century incarnations of North American Ford Pinto.

Many owners complain that airbags of the 107, C1 and Aygo sometimes inflate when a collision is not present, but the driver presses the brake pedal in order to stop the car suddenly. Others complained that their airbags didn’t inflate when needed, so they were injured as a result.

The 107, C1 and Aygo are prone to rollovers due to their proverbial stability problems. According to one survey, 75% of Peugeot 107, Citroën C1 or Toyota Aygo owners have experienced problems with stability and/or steering resulting in temporary lack of control.

Verdict: If you want a cool, small car for the city think carefully before choosing what to buy. If you want a Peugeot, ignore the 107 and go with the 207 or the 206+. If you are a Citroen lover, get a C2 (or C3 if you prefer 5 doors) instead of getting a C1 and if you are a Toyota fan, the slightly larger Yaris is much more attractive than the Aygo.
