UK car production up 6% in October

UK car production rose last month, fuelled by growing global demand for British-made models, industry figures have shown.

The number of cars made in October totalled 112,798, a 6% rise on the same month last year, said the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

SMMT said it signalled “steady improvement in global vehicle markets”.

It added that the number of cars built between January and October totalled 1,050,689, a 31% increase on the same period last year.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: “The industry’s focus on low-carbon technology and its global reach can help generate the private sector growth the country needs.”

Car production may be up by 6% but the cars are not for the Uk they are for europe who are taking advantage of the weak pound. For example if you wanted to order a brand new Vauxhall Insignia you would have to wait until next february at the earliest to take delivery of that vehicle, that is almost unheard of for any Vauxhall but you can understand why this is the case. If a manufacturer sells a car abroad which is manufactured in the Uk because of the exchangerate the manufacturer’s margin is greatly enhanced.

True, they may not be for the UK market, but any increase in production can only be a good thing as far as UK jobs are concerned, we may be interested in selling as many units as we possibly can, but let’s not forget those who build them need to pay their bills as well.

More production for here or abroad equals a certain amount of job security, something this industry needs badly.
