Car Makers Premier League – November 2010

It’s time once more for the Car Makers Premier League where each and every month we examine the top 20 manufacturers by number of units registered and see just how they look when compared with the previous month. At the end of the year who will be crowned champion? Who will drop out of the top 20 as the year unfolds and which high achievers will be promoted?

Carrying on with the season and Novembers’ statistics (based on the SMMT figures for UK new car registrations in November 2010) turned out to be better than industry experts and most people in the trade were expecting, with the headline figure for the month being a 11.5% decrease to 139,875 units.

In November 2009 the market, buoyed by scrappage, recorded a massive 57.6% increase on the previous year to 158,082 units with nearly 22% of these registrations being down to the scheme.

Overall the top 11 positions outperformed the market this month and the top 7 (BMW, SEAT, VW, Skoda, Vauxhall, Peugeot and Mini) all managed to improve on November 2009.

BMW hold on to top spot this month while SEAT leap up from 8th into second with a 14% increase on November last year. This month it’s herzlichen glückwunsch unt dreimal hoch! to VW as their brands occupy 2nd 3rd 4th and 9th (Audi spoiled the party by slipping from 4th to 9th).

Other big movers this month were Honda (up from 16th to 12th) and SEAT who continue last month’s progress moving from 8th to 2nd.

This month we once again say goodbye to Volvo who drop out of the top 20 with 1,991 units registered (a massive drop of 46% on last year) and welcome back Land Rover whose 2,382 units take them back to 10th (a drop of 4% on November 2009).

All in all a better than expected month, and the SMMT are predicting the year as a whole to reach 2.03 million units, which will be 2% up on 2009. With the VAT rise due in January it will be very interesting to see how the early months of 2011 pan out.
