Car Makers Champions League 2010

Decembers’ new car registration figures are in so we can take a look at the final table for 2010. Who won the league? Who made it into Europe? Who got relegated? All will be revealed but firstly let’s take a look at the Car Makers Premier League for December 2010.

This month’s Car Makers Premier League (based on the SMMT figures for UK new car registrations in December 2010) is, on the surface, somewhat discouraging. The headline figure is an 18% drop on December last year, down 27,119 units to 123,817.

In December 2009 the market, buoyed by scrappage, recorded a massive 38.9% increase on the previous year to 150,936 units with nearly 21% of these registrations being down to the scheme.
Overall the top 12 positions outperformed the market this month and the top 6 all managing to improve on December 2009.

Mini take top spot this month with a 24% increase on 2009 while Renault leap up from 15th into 2nd with a 15% increase on December last year. Other big movers this month were Land Rover (up from 10th to 4th) and Nissan moving up from 13th to 5th.

This month we once again say goodbye to SEAT who drop out of the top 20 with 2,039 units registered (a drop of 18% on last year) and welcome back Volvo whose 2,332 units take them back to 14th (a drop of 33% on December 2009).

Let’s now take a look at the final table for 2010 and check the standings of the various top 20 manufacturers we have followed throughout the year. As the SMMT themselves say 2010 was a game of two halves with volumes up 19.9% in the first half of the year, but falling 13.8% in the second half with the step change being a reflection of the removal of the Scrappage Scheme in March 2010.

Champions – Renault
A great year for Renault, last year they finished bottom, this year top with a 51% increase on 2009.

Champions League – Land Rover, Nissan
A fantastic year for Land Rover increasing registrations by 28% and a consistent performance by Nissan, 3rd for the second year running.

Champions League Playoff – BMW
A good, solid performance with an 11% increase on 2009

Europa league Playoff Round – Kia, Skoda
A creditable finish for Kia give the drop of in scrappage sales in the 2nd half of the year and another solid performance for Skoda improving on last year’s 7th position.

Europa League 3rd Qulaifying Round – Mini
Yet another strong performance with a 10% increase on 2009 and moving up two positions from 9th last year.

Relegated to the Championship – Fiat, Toyota, Honda
Oh dear! Fiat take a tumble from 4th last year to relegation fodder this, registering 12% fewer vehicles this year. Perhaps unsurprisingly Toyota, given their Annus horribilis, are relegated after a 15% drop in registrations. The whipping boys this year are Honda.
