For many motorists, the voice behind spoken instructions has become one of the most crucial factors in how well our Sat Nav performs.
Doing a little research online I discovered online comparison website Which? found motorists can navigate successfully without looking at the on-screen map or instructions if the voice is clear and concise. Unfortunately many motorists are often driven mad by the dreaded default voice options.
Not to fear however as if you’re getting bored of the same old voice, you can swap it for a different one! Unsurprisingly a market has sprung up offering a host of celebrity voices to download.
I’ve selected some of the most popular voices available on the market which may even have the ability of livening up a dull journey.
Times are tough for poor Vader with his movie appearances all but over, it seems the only work he can get these days are voiceovers and TV ads. Avid Star Wars fans across the world however have made the character’s voice once of the bestselling voice-over packs and includes accompanying sound effects including light sabres and TIE fighters. Also available in Yoda…
Beginning a common trend for comedians offering their vocal skills to navigation accessories, the Scot spoke about his immortalisation in the format stating “You’ll take the high road and I’ll take the low road, and I’ll be in Scotland afore ye with my wee canny sat nav”.
No doubt probably the least reliable fictional character to trust with directions, however motorists can enjoy his company nonetheless. Unfortunately Homer often lives up to his reputation en-route with suggestions such as, “Take the next left. We might find an ice cream truck! Hmmmm ice cream” and “Take the ferry! But I’m warning you, I might get sea-sick in here. I’m getting sea sick just thinking about it”.
Brian Blessed offered to bark directions at motorists by popular demand from a campaign on Facebook. Fan of the bearded actor can enjoy puns on Blessed’s famous lines from the film Flash Gordon appearances over the years including, “Drive, hawkmen, drive” and “Gordon’s arrived!” However I’d advise keeping the sound low on this option to prevent permanent ear damage.
Oddly enough the biggest person next in demand to offer their vocal talents to the Sat Nav world is Arnold Schwarzenegger aka the Terminator. No doubt he will provide the line “I’ll be back” every time it’s switched off!
Stephen Harvey co-owns The Sat Nav Company, a specialist online retailer specialising in a sat nav and GPS systems for a range of vehicles from cars to motorcycles…with normal voices to start with but you can change to a celebrity one if you want!
