We’ve all done it I’m sure. Taken our eyes off the road for just that split second too long to see why the phone just beeped. However in all honesty a mobile phone in a car is a distraction we could all probably well do without.
In fact driver inattention is the leading cause of car accidents and from research published in 2011, it is estimated that at least 23% of all traffic crashes involve mobile phones every year.
But phones are very hard to resist aren’t they? I mean if a person butted in during the middle of a conversation you’d be rightly offended but if the phone rings, well it’s OK for that to take precedence over whatever else we happen to be doing. In the car though it’s surely a different and more serious matter but help is at hand.
To make sure drivers are no longer distracted by the various beeps, flashing lights and numerous ringtones emanating from their mobile phones while behind the wheel, esure insurance has created a new mobile application for smartphones which will take the pressure off and silence the phone while the car is in motion.
The application automatically blocks all visible and audible notifications to mobile devices when it detects the car is in motion (travelling above 10mph). Drivers who find the temptation of social media and incoming messages too hard to resist can now simply decide to opt-out of all these distractions with the “DriveOFF” app.
Simple, effective and a potential life-saver.
