Everyone has heard a story about someone whose brakes went out while they were driving, and each one of those stories – even though everyone involved was probably fine – have been terrifying. Driving a car without brakes is similar to driving on an endless piece of ice. You have more control over the steering, of course, but you feel like you are out of control. How can you know if your brakes are going bad before they get to that point?
For one thing, did you know that there is a system built into your brake pads to tell you that they are wearing out? There is a small piece of metal in each pad, running in toward the tire. It is set perpendicular to the rest of the metal surface. When you wear the brake pads down so that they are almost gone and need to be changed, this metal piece starts to rub against the tire. It makes a loud scrapping noise whenever you try to stop. If you ever hear this, do not just ignore it and hope that it goes away. This means that it is time for you to get some new Pittsburgh brakes on your vehicle.
With proper care, you never have to worry about your brakes going out. Just make sure that you pay attention to what your car is telling you and replace the parts when they need to be replaced. If you do, you will never have any major problems.
